⚠️ Pro Tip: Setting the Hoop (Katsura)
To ensure longevity, authentic Japanese chisels require initial setup by the user, known as "Setting the Hoop."
The steel hoop on the handle is loose by design. Before first use, you should seat the hoop down and mushroom the wood fibers over it. This prevents the handle from splitting under heavy hammer blows. You will also need to lap (flatten) the back of the blade for optimal performance.
